Welcome to Dry It Can It! I am thrilled to have you here as a reader and to share my excitement for preserving food through canning and dehydrating.
Let me introduce myself. My name is Beth, and I dabbled in canning during my working years. Recently retired, I am back to canning and have discovered dehydrating as well.
I fell in love with the process of canning and dehydrating and the joy of opening a jar of home-canned peaches in the middle of winter or snacking on some homemade beef jerky (which my husband makes instead of me).
So, why do I love canning and dehydrating so much? Let me tell you a little bit more about the benefits of these preservation methods.
Canning is a great way to preserve food for long periods without refrigeration or freezing. This means you can store your canned goods in your pantry, and they will be ready to eat whenever needed. This is great when I need dinner in a hurry!
Canned food is also a great way to reduce food waste, as it allows you to use up excess produce that you might have otherwise thrown away.
Dehydrating, on the other hand, is also a great way to preserve fruits, vegetables, and meats without losing much of their nutritional value. When you dehydrate food, you remove the moisture content, meaning the food will last much longer than fresh produce. Dehydrated foods are also great for snacking on the go, making them a lightweight and nutritious addition to any backpacking, camping, or road trip.
Another reason why I love canning and dehydrating is because it allows me to create my unique recipes and flavors. When you preserve your food, you have complete control over the ingredients and the flavor profile. This means you can experiment with different herbs and spices or even try some unusual flavor combinations. It's a great way to get creative in the kitchen and explore new tastes.
Finally, canning and dehydrating are wonderful skills to have in your back pocket, especially in times of emergency or disaster. In a power outage or other emergency, you can rely on your preserved food to nourish and sustain you. It's a way of being self-sufficient and prepared for any situation.
So, whether you're a seasoned canner, dehydrator, or a complete beginner, I hope you'll find something of interest here on Dry It Can It. I'll be sharing my favorite recipes, tips, and tricks, as well as some fun DIY projects related to food preservation.
I believe preserving food is not just a practical skill but also a way to connect with the natural world and our heritage. It's a way of honoring the seasons and of celebrating the bounty of the earth. I hope that through this blog, I can inspire you to try out some new recipes and to explore the wonderful world of canning and dehydrating.
Thank you for joining me on this journey, and I look forward to sharing my passion with you. Happy preserving!
